Who We Are

Kohn Rath Danon Lynch & Scharf, LLP is a  Vermont law firm located in the Town of Hinesburg, providing a broad and comprehensive array of legal services to our clients.  Our attorneys have experience in many practice areas of the law.

Roger E. Kohn opened a practice in the Hinesburg Town Hall in 1974. David Rath joined the practice in 1979.  They soon outgrew the Town Hall office, and moved to a circa 1840 parsonage on Route 116 (Main Street) in 1979, the firm being known as Kohn & Rath. Beth Danon, after practicing for about 15 years elsewhere in Vermont, formed Blackwood & Danon, P.C., with Eileen Blackwood.  In 2009 Kohn & Rath and Blackwood & Danon, P.C. merged.  In 2012, Eileen Blackwood was appointed City Attorney for the City of Burlington, and accordingly left the firm.  Robert Scharf, joined the firm March 10, 2014 and David Lynch joined the firm June 1, 2015.

Attorney Biographies

Vermont lawyer Roger KohnRoger E. Kohn was born in New Jersey, and moved to Vermont in 1971. Roger was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, with a major in physics. He obtained his law degree magna cum laude (with high honors) from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1971, where he was a Comment Editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. He received the Henry C. Loughlin prize for legal ethics. Roger served as a law clerk to the Honorable Bernard J. Leddy, Chief U.S. District Judge, and worked at Vermont Legal Aid before opening his practice in Hinesburg.

Roger is a Past President of the Chittenden County Bar Association, and a member of the Vermont Bar Association and the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association (Vermont Association for Justice).  He is the President of the Vermont Employment Lawyers Association, and a past chairman of the Vermont Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Committee.  Roger is the author of a series of articles on employment law, has taught classes on the Uniform Commercial Code, and has been a presenter at numerous seminars in the areas of trial practice, employment law, workers’ compensation, and legal ethics. He has been peer-review rated as AV® Preeminent ™ by Martindale- Hubbell and has been listed in SuperLawyers magazines for a number of years in the categories of general litigation, plaintiff’s personal injury, and employment law. Roger is admitted to practice before the Vermont Supreme Court, the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.  Roger was a member of the Hinesburg Planning Commission for over 25 years, and is the managing partner of Kohn Rath Danon & Lynch.  Roger focuses his practice in the areas of employment law, personal injury, workers’ compensation, commercial litigation, computer law, and real estate and land use.

Vermont attorney David RathDavid Rath was born in Washington, D.C. in 1950 and grew up in Cooperstown, New York, moving to Vermont in 1974. David was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1972 and from the Franklin Pierce Law Center, now University of New Hampshire School of Law in 1979. David originally joined Roger Kohn in Hinesburg as an associate, and in 1981 they became partners in the predecessor firm to Kohn Rath Danon Lynch & Scharf. David focuses his practice in the areas of forest and agricultural lands and wetlands conservation, commercial real estate and representation of bicyclists injured in collisions with motor vehicles. David is admitted to practice in the Vermont Supreme Court, the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the United States District Court for the District of Vermont.

David Rath was an adjunct professor of Business Law at St. Michael’s College for many years, and has presented a variety of seminars and training sessions in the areas of his practice. He is a member of the Vermont Bar Association, having served on the Board of Managers of that organization for several years. He has been active in community affairs, serving on the Monkton Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Adjustment, and was previously the chair of the Champlain Valley Union High School Board.

David is an elite masters bicycle racer and has twice won the Masters National Cyclocross Championships.

David works part-time. David’s wife works at the International School of Stavanger in Norway. David works remotely from Norway for seven months a year and from the firm’s law offices in Hinesburg for five months.

Vermont trial lawyer Beth DanonBeth A. Danon received her B.A. Degree from CUNY Hunter College and her J.D. Degree from CUNY Law School at Queens College. She was Law Clerk to Vermont Supreme Court Justice Frank G. Mahady. Except for the period from 2001 through to 2002, when she was the supervising attorney at Vermont Protection and Advocacy, Inc., in Montpelier, Vermont, she has been in private practice Vermont for over 20 years. She is a past President of the Vermont Association for Justice (formerly called the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association), a past President of the Vermont Bar Foundation, and a member of the Vermont Employment Lawyers Association. She also serves as an alternate on the Winooski Development Review Board. She concentrates her practice in the fields of personal injury, employment, professional licensing, civil rights law, social security disability, workers’ compensation, affordable housing, and real estate. Beth is the author of a number of articles on disability and discrimination law.  Beth has been listed in SuperLawyers magazine for 2013 – 2015 in the category of plaintiffs’ personal injury.

Vermont business lawyer Robert Scharf
Robert W. Scharf earned his J.D. from Vermont Law School.  At law school he competed in Moot Court and worked as a researcher in Vermont Law School’s Land Use Institute.  Originally from Connecticut, Robert’s undergraduate studies took place in Connecticut and France, and he received a Master’s degree for graduate studies in England.  He worked in France, England and other countries on foreign aid policy and development projects before returning to the United States and Vermont.  Robert recently ran his own practice where he also co-founded the Vermont Employers Law Center, Inc.  He has been associate/of counsel at Chittenden County and Northeast Kingdom law firms, and was a summer clerk for the US Bankruptcy Court in Rutland.  Prior to his legal career, Robert had a successful decade-long career in government, international organizations, non-profits and academic institutions.  He has also set up and operated several small businesses here in Vermont, including a restaurant and farm-related businesses.

Robert focuses his practice on business and employment law, commercial and residential leasing, homeowners associations, civil litigation, bank counsel, modification and restructuring of secured debt, real estate including Act 250 proceedings, and conservation/farm law.  Robert is admitted to practice before the Vermont Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, and is a member of the Vermont Bar Association.

Robert serves on the Shelburne Natural Resources and Conservation Committee and Shelburne Craft School Board of Directors, and is a member of the local business association, and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). He is an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and a Certified Rugby Referee.
